Self Drive Removals Van Hire

3.5t Dropwells, Lutons & Box Vans for Furniture & House Moves

For many years some of our most popular hire vans have been luton box vans and “dropwell” lutons, which are the perfect vehicle for removals companies and for families moving house.  Luton box vans are, as their name suggests, have a large box-shaped body.  For easy loading, most regular luton box vans feature a tail lift.  A dropwell luton removals van, or “Pantechnicon” has a lowered floor section at the rear of the body, to aid in the loading and safe storage of bulky items such as furniture.

Dropwell lutons can be stepped into from street level, rather than being several feet from the ground as with a standard luton or box van.  For this reason a tail lift is unneccessary for loading acces, so dropwell luton vans do not have tail lifts fitted.  Applications include furniture removals, moving house, carrying stock for shops/stalls, carrying light building materials, antiques dealers, and many more.

High-volume luton box vans and dropwell lutons are perfect to hire for a weekend house move.  Their large internal volume offers between 20m³ and 23.5m³ load space volume!  Despite their large capacity and overall length, our 3.5 tonne lutons & dropwells can be driven by anyone with a standard category B driving licence.  Inside our luton bodies you’ll find internal load lashing rails – to allow goods, furniture and valuables to be secured in the body and kept safe & dry during transit and storage.  The large cargo storage capacity in the box style body is ideal for carrying bulky items, which aren’t heavy enough to justify the use of a 7.5t box van.  Dropwell bodies tend to be around 2 feet longer than standard luton vans but subsequently also have a lower payload.

For extremely large moves, we hire 7.5 tonne GVW box lorries with tail lifts.  These vehicles boast much larger volume and payloads than 3.5 tonne lutons and box vans, but they can only be hired and driven by persons holding a Category C1 driving licence entitlement.  This means that, unfortunately, we are unable to hire these lorries to vast majority of drivers who passed their test from 1997 onwards.

For smaller moves – or when the majority of your belongings are being transported by a specialist removal company – a long wheelbase or Jumbo size panel van may be a more suitable vehicle to hire.  Although they cannot match the load volumes of dropwells and lutons, panel vans tend to have larger weight carrying capabilities, plus they’re easier to park and have superior fuel economy.

If you are unsure whether a panel van, luton box van or  dropwell luton would be the best van to hire for a house move, please contact our experienced team who will be happy to advise.
