Small Car-Derived Highway Maintenance Van with ‘Chapter 8’ High Visibility Kit and LED Strobe Beacon.  For use on motorways and highways for road maintenance and in other situations where regulations require the use of compact hi-vis vehicles. These compact small vans are extremely versatile and economical.  Just like the cars they’re based upon, they can be driven on a standard category B car licence.

We have a selection of Vauxhall Corsa ‘Highway Maintenance‘ Vans on our light commercial hire fleet.  These vehicles come complete with Chapter 8 reflective kits and low-profile LED beacons at the rear. The rear of these vehicles are covered in high visibility reflective conspicuity markings/decals/graphics (chevrons) and amber hazard lighting to comply with regulations for road working & highway maintenance applications.

The Vauxhall Corsa van has the following approximate internal loadspace dimensions:

Does the vehicle I’m hiring need to be Chapter 8 compliant?

Your vehicle should be Chapter 8 compliant if it is likely to stop, or be in use for work purposes, on any highway or high-speed road. This would generally be classed as “Highway Maintenance” use. The Traffic Signs Manual, Chapter 8 part 2, Section 05.2.3, specifies that vehicles stopping on high-speed roads should use the following specifications for chevron markings:

Rear markings on cars & vans should be upward facing chevrons in alternating red and yellow stripes.

Each chevron stripe should be no less than 150mm in width and angled upwards between 45 and 60 degrees

The yellow stripes should be non-reflective and fluorescent, contrasting with the red to provide sufficient daytime and dusk visibility.

The red stripes are to provide maximum night visibility and therefore must be of retro-reflective material

Without obscuring windows, lighting and registration number plates, the chevrons should cover as much of the rear of the vehicle as possible.

Vehicles of this size (under 7.5t) have the following recommended specifications for chevron markings (for use on roads with a speed limit of >40mph):

Red retro-reflective strips to mark any leading edges, including rear facing edges of doors, guardrails and equipment lockers

Highway Maintenance signs mounted on the rear of the vehicle, in non-reflective black text on either a non-reflective, reflective or retro-reflective yellow background

Rear chevrons in retro-reflective red & non-reflective fluorescent yellow

50mm side markings made from a yellow retro reflective material applied to the length of the vehicle

INSURANCE EXCLUSIONS:  Please note that when hiring vehicles on our own insurance we, regrettably, cannot cover drivers of 70 years of age and above, or those under 25 years of age (more info in our FAQs). All drivers must have held a full licence for at least 2 years. Towing with the vehicle is NOT permitted; even if the vehicle you hire has a towbar fitted. If you need to tow with your hire vehicle, you must arrange additional insurance cover prior to commencement of the hire agreement.

DRIVING LICENCE VALIDITY: Since DVLA abolished the paper counterpart driving licence, it has affected how hire companies are able to validate driving licences of their customers. Hirers must now enter their details into a website in order to generate a validation code to share with us, otherwise we are unable to hire to them.

LONDON ULEZ (ULTRA Low Emission Zone) & Clean Air Zones

Thanks to meeting the Euro 6 emissions rating, this vehicle is suitable for use within the London ULEZ Low Emission Zone and the Clean Air Zones operating in cities such as Birmingham, Sheffield, Tyneside – Newcastle and Gateshead, Greater Manchester, Bradford, Bath, Bristol & Portsmouth. If you plan to use your hired vehicle within a Clean Air Zone or the enlarged ULEZ zone in Greater & Central London, please specify a Euro 6 vehicle when making your booking.

Please note that due to the increased cost of modern vehicles, the rental price of a Euro 6 model may be higher than a Euro 5 model; but if you will be entering a ULEZ or CAZ this extra cost will be more than offset by not having to pay an entry charge.
